Happy Hobbit Day!

 Good morning!

“‘What do you mean?’ he said. ‘Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?’” - Gandalf in The Hobbit

(Ok, you got me, it isn't morning, but I had to fit one of my favorite GandaIf quotes in here somewhere!)

If you didn't already know, today is the birthday of some of my favorite literary characters, Bilbo and Frodo Baggins! I've been reading 'The Hobbit' to the kids, so they too could share in my joy of these beloved characters and their wonderful adventures created by Tolkein. Naturally, we had to celebrate Hobbit style with food aplenty! (This is the post where I totally nerd out...you have been forewarned!)

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”   -The Hobbit

Gio was the only one who was able to squeeze in second breakfast, and unfortunately we missed elevensies due to a shopping expedition. By lunchtime, however, we were able to sit down to a fine meal fit for a Hobbit!

After lunch we made some of Beorn's twice baked honey cakes to enjoy with teatime and dessert after dinner. They were quite hardy and we could see why Beorn would send these with the Dwarves and Bilbo for their long journey!

"The making of these was one of his secrets; but honey was in them, as in most of his foods, and they were good to eat, though they made one thirsty…"  -The Hobbit

We enjoyed our tea (hot chocolate for the kids) while listening to mom read 'The Hobbit'.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” -The Hobbit

For dinner we had a sort of deconstructed chicken pot pie with biscuits on the side (not homemade, I took the easy way out today!). We definitely felt like it was a meal fit for a Hobbit.

To end our Hobbit day, we finished reading 'The Hobbit'!

“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”  -The Hobbit

We certainly enjoyed our impromptu celebration today! We hope that you all are well and that you had a wonderful day filled with good food and drink!

"May the hair on you toes never fall out!" -The Hobbit

Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Veterans Day to all of our family members who have served our country and/or are currently serving our country! Thank you for all that you do/have done to help better our country and the people that live here. Adam had to work today, but my parents, sister, and brother-in-law had the day off, so Alida and I were able to enjoy some time with them this afternoon. Alida woke up with a bit of a stomach bug this morning, but seems to be feeling better, which we are so thankful for! We hope that everyone had a great day! This picture was taken in early October. We have a great apple tree in our backyard that grows 2 different kinds of apples! Alida found this apple on the ground and thought that she'd give it a try... She definitely enjoyed that apple, so I'd say it was a good pick! Alida learned how to climb up on our kitchen chairs in mid-October. I thought that pushing the chairs in under the table would be able to prevent her from climbing on them when ...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Wow! I don't know where to begin with all that has been going on this past week, so I'll let the pictures do the talking... We certainly have been enjoying our extra time with Adam during this Christmas break from school and the extra days that he's gotten to have off of work for the holidays! Here Adam and Alida are playing dress up- below is a video of how the process worked... unfortunately the video is sideways, so you may have to turn your head, or the computer screen...enjoy! The Very Hungry Caterpillar is quickly becoming a favorite of Alida's, this girl definitely loves story time! She didn't want to wear her clothes, but Alida had fun wearing her new apron from grandma! This is the new party dress that Alida got from her Great-Aunt Janell and Uncle John. She wore it to our friend's wedding which took place during Mass on the Feast of the Holy Family! And of course, no outfit is complete without movie star sunglasses! Her...
